Change of cover to the last Warpness album

I just changed the cover for the last Warpness album. I don`t know why I did it different in the first place. This cover was made only for this purpose, but I changed it in the last minute when I release this album in 2020. Been regretting ever since. Well. No I think it was time to do it right. Here it is.

The album you can find here. Only digital on Bandcamp. And also the last album using the name Warpness. That is a story you can read about here.

Warpness 2016-2021

Warpness 2016-2021

The moniker WARPNESS had come to an end.

From the beginning this name was a tribute to ancient relatives I remembered as child. My great grand mother name was Charlotte Varpness. I have good memories of her two sisters: Ingrid and Ellen Varpness. They were really a part of my childhood. William, Lolle and Marie emigrated to America.

Varpneset is a place just outside Namsos in Norway. This was the place you went with the ferry to the island Otterøya. In 1977 the bridge “Lokkaren” was opened and the ferry was not needed anymore. Varpneset become a sort of hidden pearl. (Warpness was the old name, before changing with the “V” letter.)

Memories are fading away. So does the history. But I do remember that we do pottery from the clay at the beach. I also remember the old white house where there was a kiosk managed by my ancient family.

“Aunt” Ingrid and Ellen was really 2 very different persons. Ingrid was the gentle and kind person. Ellen was the angry sister, and sure had her own opinion about everything. But kind in her own way. I loved them both!

Charlotte I can not remember, but I use to call her “Olde” as a very little child, before she died. Charlotte is mother of my grand dad Ståle Øistein Davidsen, who died when I was only 15. That was a sad loss I still think a lot of.

Because of my relatives I called myself Warpness to keep they`re name alive.

Musically it became a diversity.

At one side it was ambient and quiet music. Album such as “One Note”, “Atmosphere” and “The Wind”. These are sort of aunt Ingrid. But I doubt she would understand this kind of music.

At the other end Warpness became experimental, dark ambient and noise.

“The Labyrinth” is an EP that came to life during the invitation from Unexplained Sounds Group; Raffaele Pezzella.

“Mørkerom” is a personal favorite. I had to challenge myself a lot for this album. Be a better musician. Be better on technical stuff. Mix. Mastering.

The album was made in Flatdal, Telemark, late autumn 2017. It became very dark. But I learned a lot during this process. Maybe this was aunt Ellen after all. I still see this as an important album in my career.

But it all come to an end. Warpness moniker still is a tribute to my relatives on my mothers side. I know that music was a great interest in my ancient family. The times are changing and a synth was not and instrument back in those days.

My problem is that Warpness is not me.

I must admit that I hide myself behind this moniker in fact that I was not a good musician yet. Maybe I still not am, but I think it is time to stand up for myself now. Even my years have changed a lot, digging into making music. I better take the next level on my musical journey.

Warpness: The Wind (album)

This album continues were "Atmosphere" end. Beautiful small sounds and melodic as a new quiet. Warpness have proved his taste for the easy and solid work. (Even with some influences from the album Elrox ambient session: Tralfamadore.) "The Wind" got some edge to it all. A beautiful ambient album.

The voice of the wind whispering in you`re ears Slow down.
I am here Close you`re eyes and see. Sometimes disturbing but mostly quiet.
I tell you a story about me, the wind. You have to listen, listen carefully:
Can you feel the moist, and the breeze on you`re skin?
It is my breath connecting my nature with you. I am the wind. You are the free spirit.
You can`t see me, only what I do. The presence of nature, within you.
Listen.
Then listen again.
Then you expose the picture from fantasy and behind.
And you are there, in the middle of it. Open you`re eyes again, whenever you are ready.

I took the liberty to use my music on this amazing film.

Richard Gürtler on my EP "The Labyrinth"

Review of "The Labyrinth" EP-CD by Warpness Written by Richard Gürtler
Behind Warpness is hidden Norwegian soundcarver Tom Ståle Engebretsen, who is responsible for gemstones such as "Atmosphere", released in April 2017, or "Tralfamadore" recorded under the name Elrox Ambient Session. This one is out since August 2015. Warpness' newest EP "The Labyrinth" was released on Tom's Tape The Sound label during July 2017, the main idea behind this release was born after Warpness recorded a track "The Labyrinth" for a compilation on Italian label Eight Tower Records entitled "Labyrinth". The CDr comes in a plastic sleeve with 2-panel insert.
The 4-track EP reveals with the main composition, 5-minute "Part 1", which appears on above mentioned "Labyrinth" compilation. Emerging enigmatic, choir-driven drone reinforced by cyber-tech signals and bleeps along with ephemeral chopper fragments drifts, meanders and surreptitiously coalesces with persistently ascending and evanescing array of bizarre meridians. "Part 2" incorporates glimmeringly mesmerizing trotting rhythm bridged with rather minimal, ear-tickling icy sounds. Hissy quietudes clandestinely permeate across along with intangibly guarding buzzes, while reflective chords of electric strings slowly percolate as well. Intriguingly sparse, yet abundantly efficient. "Part 3", at 3:33 the shortest piece on the EP, delves into weirder and intenser terrains, merging constantly arising voice glimpses with rawer stringed tapestries and guiding steady cadences of light industrial fragrances, here and there imbued by peculiarly titillating sci-fi flares. Nearly 7-minute long "Part 4" closes this entertaining ride with nebulously squeaking timbres and relentlessly helixing oracular roars, which are tightly hanging above traversing laid-back downtempo repetitions and transient diaphanous stringed exotica occasionally thrown in.
Although "The Labyrinth" is to my taste more rhythm-charged endeavor, its sole creator has again managed to fully unfold his creatively distinctive insignias that were extraordinarily exhibited on already mentioned masterpieces such as "Tralfamadore" and "Atmosphere". Sure, a journey that lasts only for 21 minutes is a quite short for some deeper immersion, but even this brief effort clearly showcases the gift of Tom Ståle Engebretsen. And by the way, when ordering "Atmosphere" CDr, you get "The Labyrinth" CDr EP as a free bonus. Add to that "Tralfamadore" and you will get a bundle you simply can't go wrong with!!! And if you are a cassette aficionado, then you might want to include also "One Note" album released in December 2016.

Warpness on Eight Tower Records

Proud to be on this compilation from Eight Tower Records. This is a project by Raffaele Pezzella in Italy. He have really make things get happening for me.  My track is number 6 on this compilation and is named by the title of the project. The Labyrinth. You have to hurry up if you want CD from this compilation. Exclusively only 50 are made. Follow the link to this album.

I was invited to participate on this when I was in "Studio Flatdal" in may this year. So I composed a brand new track for this. And even more good news: There will be a cd-EP from me with 4 tracks to come. The Labyrinth! TBA.

Warpness : Atmosphere

Berkdrums To me, one of the biggest surprise-albums of 2017 so far... Warpness (Tom Ståle Engebretsen) creates definitely his own sound with this album, a melange of recognizable ambient-styles... I notice some Chronotope Project (especially in part 2), some Roach, the use of field-recordings and small percussion sounds remind me of some Alio Die influence and Dataobscura-acts like Robert Davies. Even some space ambient floats around... A STUNNING album that puts Warpness on the map!! Highly recommended...

My latest release on the label TAPE THE SOUND! Lot`s of good respons allready. CD and digital! Only on bandcamp.
