Sometimes you get a pleasant and genuinely enjoyable assignment.
Helene Fjell and I were invited by Mikkel and Kari for a weekend visit to Atelier Bassen on Skåtøy, just outside Kragerø. Atelier Bassen is part of the legacy of Anne-Sofie Norberg-Schulz. The property consists of two estates: Osvikkjær and Stibraaten.
Bassen's wish was for the site to be used as an artist-in-residence program. Our task was to carry out a feasibility study and explore its potential. Let me say right away: What a wonderful place!
There are several buildings on the property, offering plenty of space for artists to immerse themselves in their work. Whether you are a painter, composer, writer, photographer, or work in another artistic discipline, the setting provides exceptional opportunities. Some upgrades would certainly be beneficial, but the place is already fully usable as it stands. Inspiration is everywhere.
Atelier Bassen is currently being established as a foundation. In the future, artists will be able to apply for residencies here, either for shorter or longer stays. The vision is to host activities between March and November each year. For now, everything is still in the planning stage, but I expect the process will move forward quickly.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mikkel and Kari for inviting us on this trip. It was a pleasure to spend time together, and those who are given the opportunity to work on their art here are truly fortunate.
Best of luck with this exciting project.
